Today is Giving Tuesday. Described as the “opening day of the giving season,” it is a time when charities, companies and individuals rally for their favourite causes. It’s a perfect time to consider supporting the editing community.

Ways to support the editing community

Support editors who have been excluded in the past

  • Editors Canada awarded The Equity Fellowship for the first time in 2021. The fellowship will be presented annually and is designed to support editors who have traditionally been excluded by the publishing and editing industries, including editors who are BIPOC (Black, Indigenous and people of colour), 2SLGBTQIA+, neurodivergent and disabled. You can donate directly to the fellowship through the Editors Canada awards program.
  • Donate to The Indigenous Editors Association, a membership organization formed as a mutual support network by Indigenous editors and publishing professionals in lands claimed by Canada.
  • Learn more about contemporary Indigenous perspectives by reading and purchasing books by Indigenous authors. Make a donation to the Indian Residential School Survivors Society (IRSSS).

Recognize excellence in editing

Editors Canada is a federally incorporated not-for-profit organization that promotes excellence in editing and provides resources for editors at every stage of their careers. Our awards, scholarship and fellowship are funded by donations. Your generous donation will help us to keep these awards running so we can continue to raise the profile of the editing profession, shine a light on excellence in editing and support the future generation of editors.

Make an impact during challenging times

While Editors Canada held a successful virtual conference this year, the organization is still rebounding from the cancellation of the international conference in June 2020. Funds raised from conference registration fees represent an important source of revenue for the association.

The decline in revenue also affected Editors Canada’s awards program. The prizes associated with the various awards normally total $4,400. Given the exceptional circumstances in 2020, the association was obliged to cut spending on the 2021 awards. Nevertheless, it was considered important to maintain continuity and neither to cancel the awards program for 2021 nor to suspend cash prizes entirely, despite their financial impact.

Editors Canada has long solicited donations to support its awards program, and of course, you can donate at any time of year. But by donating on Giving Tuesday, you can be part of a worldwide campaign promoting donations and volunteerism. No donation is too small: every gift helps and will be received with gratitude. And you’ll know that your donation is supporting a program that highlights the value of editors everywhere!

Donate to Editors Canada awards now or support the editing community by volunteering with Editors Canada.

Can you recommend any other editing or publishing communities to donate to? If so, please share them in the comments.
