Oh, hello (she says, putting her phone away). Was just scrolling through social media feeds … you know how it goes. How prevalent the internet is these days. How the concept of community has come to encompass both online and offline realities. And how the social media landscape has continued to change.
Editors Canada has national accounts on several social platforms, through which we connect with the membership, fellow organizations and the wider public. We’ve noticed the shifting tides between platforms … which brings us, dear reader, to some exciting news. Editors Canada will be joining the Bluesky social media platform!
There are a few steps and considerations that go into this process. Scroll on …
Why we’re moving from X to Bluesky
Essentially, our audience is shifting away from X (formerly known as Twitter) as that platform evolves, and our organizational goals and values are now better reflected through Bluesky. Plus, there are many benefits that come with this new platform.
A change in tone and values
When X (then Twitter) was acquired in 2022, the new leadership made policy decisions that shifted the tone and focus of the platform. With further changes and polarization on the platform, many members of our online community find themselves looking for an X alternative — and they aren’t the only ones.
The following stats, gathered by Editors Canada member and volunteer Uzoma Uponi, show that dispersal clearly:
“Between July 2024 and February 2025, [Editors Canada’s] national X account lost 418 followers. The most significant dip (over 200 accounts) occurred immediately after the 2024 US presidential elections on November 5, and followers have continued to decline since then.
In general, following the results of the US elections, X lost millions of subscribers while Bluesky users grew by the millions. Several news outlets (including Forbes, NPR, Rolling Stone, AP, AOL and CBC) reported in November 2024 that the traffic on Bluesky saw a 500% increase immediately after the elections, as subscribers who did not support Elon Musk’s political involvement deactivated their X accounts and signed up for Bluesky. This trend has continued.”
A more transparent platform
Bluesky helps reduce disinformation, malinformation and misinformation with more transparent content moderation. Compared to X, followers on Bluesky will have more control over how content from Editors Canada appears in their own feed.
And Bluesky is built on open-source, authenticated transfer protocol, which means that users can better see how the platform operates and makes its decisions. Transparency for the win.
All that under the wings of a cute blue butterfly icon. No doges here.
When we’re moving from X to Bluesky
Here are a few migration milestones to make note of:
In April, we folded the Professional Editing Standards (PES) account on X into the national Editors Canada account. (The PES account was made specifically to promote and converse about the editing standards as they were being revamped. With the conclusion of that project, the account has fallen dormant.)
From May to July, we will run a campaign across all our social media channels informing folks of the migration and inviting them to join us on Bluesky. This will include reaching out to local media and other editorial organizations.
In August, we will leave X. Instead of completely deleting our account, the profile will become inactive — both to serve as a record of the conversations and to ensure that our handle doesn’t get taken by someone else.
Find us on Bluesky
In the end, the migration of Editors Canada from one social media platform to another is one more step in the work we do to nurture and support our community. (That includes you, dear reader!)
You can follow Editors Canada’s newest social media account at @editorscanada.bsky.social. We’re looking forward to seeing you under blue skies!
Now, where did I put my phone …
