Learnings from LinkedIn: Optimize for Success

Tuesday October 27, 2020

As I write this, I’m in the midst of marking 80 LinkedIn profiles. You read that right: in both of my online writing courses this term, I’ve assigned LinkedIn profiles as task number one. That’s how important I think they are to students embarking on a new career path. Part public resumé, part networking channel, […]

Editors’ Facebook Groups

Tuesday February 2, 2021

I tend to be skeptical of the value of Facebook groups and reticent to invest time in them. But it turns out, I have nothing against Facebook groups. I just needed to find the right ones. I needed to discover the internet havens where editors can show their true colours without fear. In the early […]

Don’t Look Busy

Tuesday March 23, 2021

It’s a good thing I’m not working in-house anymore. I’ve been far too busy lately to look busy. Those of you who have worked in corporate environments know what I’m talking about: You can spend an awful lot of time and effort looking busy instead of getting things done. There are a few reasons for […]

One Year Later, Much Work Yet to Be Done: Questions to Guide Next Steps in Equity, Diversity and Inclusion

Tuesday May 25, 2021

Just over a decade ago, when I was an intern with Colorlines magazine (now Race Forward), my main task was to help build the framework for “Drop the I-Word” — a campaign to change journalistic copy-editing conventions across the U.S. We sought to have The Associated Press (AP) and news outlets cease using the word […]

The Student Affiliate Book Club Gets Subversive

Tuesday December 7, 2021

The brand-new student affiliate book club chose Carol Fisher Saller’s The Subversive Copy Editor (2nd edition, 2016) as its first book for discussion. We were intensely curious — especially those in the club who are early-career editors — about what “subversive” editing meant. In October, we met online to review “Part 1: Working with the […]

What Does a Recipe Editor Do?

Tuesday April 19, 2022

Whether for soufflé, soup, salsa or something else altogether, a culinary recipe is essentially a how-to document. As a form of technical editing, then, recipe editing is all about ensuring that the user (the reader) can successfully assemble the product (a dish). As a recipe editor, it’s my responsibility (along with the author’s, of course) […]

Tuesday May 10, 2022

The pandemic has tested our mental health time and again and taken it to its limits. It has also led to more open conversations about prioritizing mental health, especially on social media. In particular, this period has been difficult for people who identify as neurodivergent (ND) — people who have differences in brain structure and […]

Reflections on Mentorship

Tuesday August 16, 2022

When the student is ready, the teacher will appear. — Lao Tzu The mentor role is ancient and storied. Mentor, in Homer’s Odyssey, is the friend of Odysseus who tutors Telemachus, Odysseus’s son. Athena, disguised as Mentor, steers young Telemachus’s search for his father. Those ancient Greeks did spin good yarns. Here I explore the […]
