“Pay No Attention to That Man Behind the Curtain”

Tuesday August 30, 2022

What’s missing from this sample text? A set of subjects, n = 180, were surveyed using a predetermined questionnaire. Statistical analysis of the responses revealed a statistically significant pattern of association of low-frequency polysyllabic lexemes with greater intellectual value. It’s not short on words, nor on syllables per word, nor on grammatical complexity. It’s an […]

Searching the Oxford Reference Collection

Tuesday October 11, 2022

I’m a minimalist in almost all aspects of my life. The decor of my condo is spare. It’s not polished concrete like you see in those gigantic open-concept loft apartments that have been converted from warehouse spaces (though frankly I see the appeal). I generally don’t keep things unless I need them or unless they […]

An Update on the ODE

Thursday November 10, 2022

I apologize for the long break in what was supposed to be a series of monthly posts (Ode to the ODE). Part of the problem has been Life. I’ve had a busy year professionally and an even busier year personally: six weeks of travelling, my second move in a year and a beautiful new grandson. […]

Thursday November 17, 2022

Self-employed editors and writers appreciate repeat clients and referrals. The more we are known and visible, the easier it is to have client prospects. “Brag Docs”: An Aide-Mémoire

Thursday January 26, 2023

Performance reviews and discussions around compensation are part of working in-house. You can’t just unilaterally change your hourly rate. If you want to get ahead, you need to be able to have uncomfortable conversations and demonstrate your value. But if you’re anything like me, remembering what you did last week, let alone last year, can […]

The Radical Role of Developmental Editing

Thursday July 27, 2023

This post was adapted from a talk Fazeela Jiwa gave on acquisitions and developmental editing at The Festival of Literary Diversity (FOLD) this year. Writers bring the complex and embodied facets of their lives to their practice, and I approach my work as a developmental editor with this in mind. I understand editing as a […]
