Trade-Offs: Neurodivergence and Editing, Part I

Thursday October 29, 2026

I’ve been teaching editing and thinking about Editors Canada’s Professional Editorial Standards (PES) for about 10 years. In that time, I’ve thought about neurodivergence from a conscious language perspective (how we edit critically, with care and compassion) and a standards perspective (how we ensure neurodivergent editors are represented). Earlier this year, I learned that I […]

What Does Your Markup Say About You?

Tuesday March 19, 2013

A friend of mine was venting to me about his old boss, who used to look over his reports. Whenever his boss found an error, he’d not only circle it but also emphasize his discovery with an exclamation point — a practice that drove my buddy nuts. Encoded within this tiny mark of punctuation was […]

Encouraging Coworkers to See the Benefits of Editing

Thursday March 9, 2023

Working as an in-house editor often means you will be editing the work of untrained writers. You may come across colleagues who don’t want to be writing in the first place, so how do you convince them that your editing services are valuable? Sometimes you can’t. Sometimes people reject edits and say, “Scrap the whole […]

Document Prep Tips from a Book Designer

Thursday June 15, 2023

After a book has been professionally copy edited, a book designer will begin the layout. My goal is to help you, your self-publishing clients and their book designers work smarter, not harder. I often say, “It’s not the doing but the re-doing that costs.” More than just money, re-work costs us the most valuable asset […]

Up the Creek: Extreme Editing Solutions

Sometimes, we are editing “up the creek”: we have taken on too much work, neglected a deadline or otherwise wound up under pressure to produce a large amount of work in a very short time. When you’re way up that creek and your paddle is far behind you, you may have to forge a new […]
