If you’re an academic editor looking to connect with others in the field, or if you’ve ever thought about becoming an academic editor, then consider joining the Academic Editing (AE) special interest group, also known as the AE Chapter.

The AE Chapter is a virtual group jointly organized by Editors Canada and the Editorial Freelancers Association (EFA). The group was launched in September 2022, and one year later, we now have a global membership of over 600 members!

To celebrate our first anniversary, the AE Chapter put together a post explaining more about what we do and how to get involved.

About the Academic Editing Chapter

The AE Chapter aims to help academic editors share information, discuss relevant topics, develop professionally and build professional networks.

We host monthly social events, which currently alternate between book club meetings and coffee chats. We also hold quarterly professional development events — past events included topics such as artificial intelligence (AI) and automation and working with multilingual authors.

Recently, members of the chapter were able to convene in person at Editors Canada’s and the EFA’s annual conferences. We hope to host more networking events at future conferences. We’ve also begun curriculum planning for webinars and courses in academic editing — stay tuned for our offerings!

Get involved

We invite anyone interested in academic editing to register for our events and activities. These are all free of charge, and you do not need to be a member to participate. You can also sign up for our mailing list to learn more!

The AE Chapter is currently run by a dedicated team of 15 volunteers. The leadership team oversees committees focused on administration, communications, programming and events, book club, advocacy and education. If you are interested in volunteering or would like to learn more, email us at academic.editing@editors.ca. We always welcome feedback and ideas.
