In 2020, a pandemic furlough prompted me to launch the editing business I’d been researching for some time. By spring 2021, I’d handed in my notice and embraced full-time freelancing. Weeks later, I accepted a volunteer role with The Editors’ Weekly.
So in many ways, my time with the blog — first as proofreader, then as managing editor — has been intertwined with my growth in this field.
I’ve had the pleasure of working alongside incredible editors, from Editors Canada leadership to my fellow blog volunteers and, of course, the contributors who so generously share their insights with readers each week.
As I step back to make space for new opportunities (including working on my upcoming books!), I’m grateful to everyone who has helped me find my place in the Canadian editing community.
A new team and a new approach
We’re excited to be trying something new at The Editors’ Weekly! For years, the blog has operated with one managing editor and one proofreader. Earlier this spring, Monica Laane-Fralick joined the blog as proofreader, and I’m pleased to say that she will be remaining in her role.
To reflect the sense of community and collaboration that The Editors’ Weekly is built on, the blog’s administrative and substantive editing work will now be shared among an editorial board. I look forward to passing the red pen (well, the Google Docs!) to our fantastic new team. You’ll get to know them more in the coming weeks, but for now, please welcome the brand-new editorial board of The Editors’ Weekly!
- Zanne Klingenberg (he/they): Zanne is a queer, neurodivergent editor who has been writing and editing professionally since 2009. He edits across genres and industries, and they have a passion for diverse representation in fiction.
- Aalap Trivedi (he/il): Aalap has been editing since 2015, primarily working on scholarly projects in economics, management and history, often working with ESL authors. He also edits technical reports and educational material.
- Sayali Dighe (she/her): Sayali is an Editors Canada student affiliate with a background in writing software documentation. She is currently working toward an editing certificate at Simon Fraser University.
Get involved
One of the perks of volunteering is that I’ve had a built-in reason to read every single post we’ve shared over the past four years. I’ve learned things through writing my own posts, I’ve learned from posts that relate to my work and I’ve learned from posts that are far outside my area of expertise!
So if you’re wondering whether that idea in the back of your mind is worth sharing, I can say almost certainly that it is. Our new editorial board will be looking for ideas for upcoming posts, and I know they’d love to hear from you.
