EAC The Editors Weekly blog – Need to Know Now – Okerlund

“The volatile state of the publishing industry today—and by extension, the editing profession—can sometimes feel pretty daunting…” Editor Lana Okerlund writes about the challenges facing editors in the digital age, in “What Do Editors Need to Know Now?” for the EAC/ACR blog, The Editors’ Weekly, May 7, 2013.

Continuity in Film and Fiction

Tuesday June 4, 2013

Movies are usually shot in location order, not narrative order, which makes physical continuity important. Last week I was watching my favourite crime show, and the female lead wore a blue shirt in an interrogation scene. The camera caught the cop’s dialogue in close up, then cut to a close up of the bad guy, […]

The Inner Editor: The Useful Conversation

Wednesday July 24, 2013

The descriptive-prescriptive war is over. Long live the conversation. In the past month, my colleagues have been chatting about an article called Descriptivism vs. prescriptivism: War is over (if you want it). Its heading perpetuates a flawed premise, but the author offers good evidence that prescriptive and descriptive can both be thoughtful approaches to the […]

Dispatches 8: Looking Forward, Looking Back

Wednesday November 13, 2013

Dispatches from an Editorial Intern is a series of posts from a neophyte editor in the publishing trenches. I thought up this series while sitting in my cubicle at Random House of Canada just as I was starting my second internship. By this point I considered myself a pretty seasoned hand. I had seen a […]

Wasted Words: The Tragedies and Farces of History

Tuesday December 10, 2013

Wasted Words is a series of musings on language and usage by editor emeritus Wilf Popoff. “History repeats itself, first as tragedy, second as farce, third as more repetition.” I know Marx would have added that last part had he been on the ball. In the event, he was so fixated on dialectical something or other […]
