Multilingual Editing: Hybridity, Non-Normativity and Resistance

Thursday February 5, 2026

Picture the scene A then-young, future editor happily plays in a park with their caregiver, both recent arrivals from a distant political-economic system in the midst of collapse. The word “Canada” in cursive proudly extends across their brand-new sweatshirt. “Speak English,” a nearby voice shouts. And so, a lifelong deconstruction of language, of difference and […]

The SME and Me: Navigating an Edit with a Subject Matter Expert

Thursday May 7, 2026

The first publishing company I worked for had an in-house newsletter that included photos from sales meetings, recipes, updates on the company baseball team (the Weasels) and random pieces on diverse topics. One of my contributions was titled something like, “How to impress at cocktail parties.” (Unfortunately, I can’t find the original; I hope the […]

Breaking into a new market sector as an editor

Thursday May 21, 2026

If you thought that only newbie editors find it difficult to move into a new-to-them market sector, take it from me: it is not true! Even seasoned editors feel that familiar dread when it comes to putting themselves out there in a market they’re not well established in. And it’s got nothing to do with […]

The answer, for me, is that editing has […]

Dispatches from an Editorial Intern

Tuesday March 5, 2013

Dispatches from an Editorial Intern is the first in a series of posts from a neophyte editor in the publishing trenches. Outside looking in I decided I wanted to go into publishing in early 2011. It was a good solution to my problems at the time. Problems like why I didn’t want to fill out […]

On April 1, 2013, the BC government will repeal the HST and return to the former GST + PST regime. What does that mean for self-employed editors? Digital disruptions to the book, magazine and newspaper segments of the industry in particular are like an ongoing series of earthquake tremors beneath what previously felt like steady ground. Technological innovations have brought new […]
