Editing Indigenous Writing: A Nuanced Partnership

Thursday March 16, 2023

A lot of Indigenous writing is under-edited, because many non-Indigenous editors don’t feel like they have a way in to the text and are scared of making a mistake. Other times, it can be over-edited, because the editor has shoehorned the story into a format that reflects European values and beliefs. Some Indigenous writers are […]

Leading a Team in a Corporate Workplace

Thursday May 11, 2023

I’ve been leading a small team of writers and editors since 2014. Here are some tips I’ve figured out over that time. Play to people’s strengths Let people do what they enjoy and are good at (as much as possible). In my workplace, writers and editors are usually assigned subject areas. That makes sense, in […]

Your Editors Canada National Executive Council

Thursday May 18, 2023

Editors Canada is a federally incorporated not-for-profit organization with around 1,300 members from Canada and around the world. There are several acceptable governance options for not-for-profit organizations; in the case of Editors Canada, it is governed by a national executive council (NEC) made up of several directors. I’d like to offer a refresher (or an […]

Learning to Love Style Sheets

Thursday November 9, 2023

As a copy editor, how do you feel about creating a style sheet for each project you work on? I’ve found myself in each of these camps at various times, depending on how busy my work schedule is, how complex the project is, how confident I’m feeling and what clients expect. With practice, though, I’ve […]

The Effects of AI on Academic Editing

Thursday June 20, 2024

OpenAI announced on May 13, 2024, that their new model, ChatGPT-4o — which, at its highest level, now appears to be capable of conversations almost indiscernible from those with a human — is now being made available to all users for free (with limitations). Given that ChatGPT already has over 100 million users per week, […]

How Freelance Editors Plan for the Year Ahead

Thursday November 14, 2024

I struggle with planning my freelance business: with collecting and analyzing my time-tracking data and my website analytics, with reflecting on the clients and projects I enjoyed and those I didn’t, with knowing when my calendar is fully booked and when I need to push on my marketing. I can imagine what the process of […]

We Ask a Book Coach: Part 2

Thursday May 29, 2025

I came to book coaching from a writer’s perspective. In writing my manuscript, I kept wondering whether I should wait until the last page to reach out to an editor or contact one earlier. Naturally, I reshuffled chapters, debating with myself about the narrative flow and the logic of each section. I can imagine that […]
